Our March 27, 2012 Webinar: Effects of Fuels Treatments on the Spatial Probabilities of Burning and Final Size of Recent Wildfires across the United States will be presented by Mark Cochran. Large wildfire frequency has increased several-fold in recent decades throughout the western United States. These changes have resulted from a combination of human land use practices, altered climates and shifting forest and fire management policies. Through the integration of data from the Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity (MTBS) Project, LANDFIRE and detailed treatment information from hundreds of land managers, we have assembled the necessary data to model (FARSITE) the spread and estimate the impacts of large numbers of these fires. Through assessment of many wildfires and multiple simulations of each fire, both with and without fuels treatments, we are now estimating the ways in which fuels treatments have altered the extent and spatial patterning of wildfires in recent years. The webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, March 27 at 1:00 -2:00 pm, MST.

Our January 10, 2012 webinar: Human Performance and Risk Management was presented by Ivan Pupulidy. He discussed the roles individuals, leaders and organizations have in improving performance. Historically human performance has been seen as a simply looking at how the individual workers behave. The focus of post incident analysis, for example, has been to judge actions and decisions based on the result or outcome; essentially, if the outcome was positive, then the action was appropriate or even laudatory. However, if the outcome was negative, then the individual action was deemed inappropriate; often judged to be a violation. This approach misses the system contribution to the events. This creates confusion, an undeniable level of distrust and a lack of reporting in the work force; thereby destroying the safety culture of the organization. The webinar introduced current research surrounding topics like risk assessment, reporting and learning.

Our November 30, 2011 webinar: Using fire as a restoration tool: A case study in the Gila National Forest was presented by Dr. Molly Hunter. She talked about the results of a study examining the effects of prescribed fire and resource benefit fire on understory and overstory fuels. Additionally, Dr. Hunter described forest stand conditions in areas that have been subject to multiple resource benefit fires over the course of several decades.
